In this first episode of Travel Geek Documentary Malaysia, Professor Cyle O'Donnell first visits the gritty, labyrinthine streets of Malacca. After sampling the amazing flavors of street vendors and local recipes alike, it's off to the otherworldly festival of Thaipusam, where devotees shave their heads, pierce their flesh, and carry enormous ornaments 17 kilometers from the city center to the Batu Cave in hopes of impressing the gods to give them good luck in the New Year.
